The trail matters.
The Vault makes discovery easier. It does not replace an institution’s object record, rights statement, or expertise.
Open access is an invitation. Provenance is how we accept it responsibly.
Every artwork page names the source institution, preserves its object identifier, and links to the museum record. Where an API supplies an object-level CC0 or Public Domain designation, the Vault displays it. Where that designation is missing or unclear, the Vault says so.
Download buttons provide the file recovered by Lupin. Before publishing, selling, remixing, or using an image in a sensitive context, follow the museum link and confirm the current object-level terms. Copyright, privacy, publicity, trademark, cultural heritage, and other rights can exist independently of a museum’s image licence.
Machine-assisted descriptions and tags are discovery aids. They can be incomplete or mistaken and are never presented as museum scholarship.

If a title, maker, date, cultural attribution, description, or rights note is wrong, use the source record as the reference point. Vault records are regenerated from Lupin’s catalogue and can be corrected without losing the original trail.
